Antique frame conservation and restoration requires a master craftsman to stabilize the old frame properly and to treat its gilded service. At Diego Salazar we bring more than 30 years experience to your restoration projects. It is not always the best course of action to regild a beautifully aged surface if paint or other elements have been applied to it. Sometimes the finish can be cleaned so that the original gilded surface is once again exposed. It is also possible to restore the damage to one section of a frame’s surface using new gilding that is toned to match the original aged surface. This is often a viable alternative to stripping and regilding the entire frame. We regard each frame as a work of art, and proceed accordingly.
This is a beautrtful old American salon-style frame, c. 1880. Notice the delicate incising and richly aged surface. Although the damage is extensive, the missing ornament can be repalced and the losses to the surface regilded and toned to match the orginal aged surface. |
